Künker sale 353, lot 4004

This specimen was lot 4004 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €300 (about US$418 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. 1/3 Taler 1809, G. R Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, leicht justiert, sehr schön +. Erworben im April 1969. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, one third thaler of 1809, Glatz mint. Rare, minor planchet flaws, lightly adjusted, very fine or better.)"

The Glatz mint operated while Breslau, the site of the regular mint, was under French occupation. In 1809, it struck a few of the uniformed bust type (KM 380) and a few of the bare head type (KM 386, shown here).

Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.

Specification: 8.35 g, 0.666 fine silver, this specimen 8.16 g.
