This specimen is a rare date of a series struck 1870-97 at the Zacatecas mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This specimen was lot 8995 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $977.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Zacatecas. 10 Centavos, 1873-ZsH. Rare date. One of the finest known. Dark toned. NGC AU-58."

Specification: 2.71 g, .903 fine silver, .078 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 10,000.

Catalog reference: KM 403.10.
