This specimen was lot 41445 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Gold Peso, 1878-Zs S. Zacatecas Mint. NGC MS-64. The first example we can recall encountering of this VERY SCARCE date, and tied with a single other example as the finest certified by NGC. Bold and satiny, with solid detail to the eagle and a touch of cartwheel luster to the fields." The Zacatecas mint struck gold pesos in 1872, 1875, 1878 (shown here) and 1888-90. The 1872 is the only one that counts as common. This specimen realized over seven times the catalog value.
