This specimen was lot 3382 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[1] noted, "1875 P 5 pesos. Culiacan mint. AU-58 (NGC). Eagle on cactus with snake, ground and wreath below, date below/radiant Liberty cap above scales of Justice and scroll of laws, mintmark, value around. Lustrous orange gold, scratched between final S in PESOS and 8. A rare date in the series. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
Mexican mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 8.46 g, .875 fine gold, .238 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 8.44 grams, 22.10 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 412.2, Fr-142.
