This specimen is a slightly better date of a series struck 1869-90 at the Potosi mint, which closed in 1893. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It was replaced by a smaller twenty centavos piece in 1898. The second specimen was lot 9128 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $373.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Potosi. 25 Centavos, 1889-Pi/ZsR. Toned. NGC MS-62."

Specification: 6.77 g, .903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 115,000.
