Künker sale 386, lot 5399

This specimen was lot 5399 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €650 (about US$840 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Georg I. 1615-1656. Kipper-60 Groschen 1622, Zwickau. Münzzeichen Anker · und drei Schwäne. III. Sorte. Sehr schön +. Aus der Sammlung "Cygnus in Nummis". (electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, kipper sixty groschen of 1622, Zwickau mint, mintmark anchor and three swans, third type. Choice very fine.)"

The elector struck 8, 10, 20, 30 and 60 groschen in dozens of varieties. The shortsighted overissue of kipper coinage created a brief inflationary bubble in Germany 1619-24. After it burst, the debased coinage was called in and melted, accounting for its rarity today. The SCWC lists KM 362, 363, 364, 365, 366, 367, 368, 369, 370, 372, 373, 374, 376, 377, 378, 379, 380 as 60 groschen for 1622. This example has the weight of 7/9 thaler but the face value of 2½ thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 22,48 g.

Catalog reference: KM 378, Rahnenführer/Krug 566 v leicht var.
