Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 1867
JE160-1867r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1867 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €390 (about US$494 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis-Philippe (1830-1848), AV 20 francs, 1830 A, Paris. Tête nue. Tranche en creux. Rare. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis Philippe, 1830-48, gold twenty francs of 1830, Paris mint, bare head, recessed edge lettering. Rare, fine to very fine.)"

This is a scarce date whether it has raised or recessed edge lettering. The type is also known for 1831-B (Rouen mint), 1831-T (Nantes mint), 1831-A (Paris mint) and 1831-W (Lille mint). In 1831, the Tiolier bust was dropped in favor of the Domard bust, which was used until the end of the regime in 1848.

Recorded mintage: 18,391 (incuse and raised lettering) plus 431,495 for Charles X[2].

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, Designed by Nicolas-Pierre Tiolier, 1784-1853.

Catalog reference: F.524/1, KM 746.1, Gad-1030; Fr-553a.
