Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 1866

This specimen was lot 1866 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,519 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Charles X (1824-1830), AV 20 francs, 1830 W, Lille. Bel exemplaire avec brillant de frappe. Rare dans cette qualité. Superbe. (kingdom of France, Charles X, 1824-30, gold twenty francs of 1830, Lille mint. Nice example with mint luster, rare in this quality, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1824-30 at four mints (Paris, Lille, Nantes and Perpignan) and the 1825-A is by far the most common date. A few of the 1830-A have reeded edges instead of lettered edges. Two reverse hubs were used; one with 4½ leaves in the wreath and the other with five. This is a scarce date. Altho Paris struck twenty francs for Charles X and his successor Louis Philippe in 1830, Lille did not.

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Auguste-François Michaut.
