France 1830-A 5 francs Dav-89
The first specimen was lot 1134 in Sedwick sale 10 (Winter Park, FL, October 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "France (Paris mint), 5 francs, Louis Philippe (without ordinal), 1830-A, raised lettering on edge, rare. AU-UNC with light toning and subtle luster, desirable transitional issue." The second specimen was lot 40508 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,955. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 5 Francs, 1830-A. NGC MS-65. Edge lettering in relief with ordinal 'I'. Attractive dark tone on obverse, with underlying luster. From the Madeleine Collection." There are four major varieties of Louis Philippe écus for 1830, the first year of his reign: with and without "I" after his name and with the edge lettering raised or incuse. The Tiolier bust shown here was abandoned midway thru 1831 for the Domard bust, creating another slew of varieties for that year.
Recorded mintage: 2,420,032 (all varieties of Louis Philippe).
Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Nicholas Pierre Tiolier, 1784-1853. This specimen 25.0 grams.
