France 1830-MA 5 francs Dav-88
This specimen was lot 5014 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €440 (about US$576 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH. Charles X, 1824-1830. 5 Francs 1830, MA, Marseille. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (kingdom of France, Charles X, 1824-30, five francs of 1830, Marseille mint. Cabinet piece, beautiful patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This type was struck during the reign of Charles X (1824-30) from numerous mints. The silver five francs of this regime are divided into two types, most easily distinguished by the position of MICHAUD's name near the base of the king's bust. The specimen shown is the second type and was struck at Marseille. This date is priced about double the Paris mint issue. The Louis Philippe five francs from Marseille is rare.
Recorded mintage: 1,802,267 plus 65,448 for Louis Philippe[2].
Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste-François Michaut (1786-1879), this specimen 25.04 g.
