Sincona sale 69, lot 468

This specimen was lot 468 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 525 CHF (about US$697 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH. Charles X. 1824-1830. 5 Francs 1829 MA, Marseille. Vorzüglich-FDC. Herrliche Patina. (kingdom of France, Charles X, five francs of 1829, Marseille mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated, Most attractively toned.)"

This type was struck during the reign of Charles X of France (1824-30) from numerous mints. The silver five francs of this regime are divided into two types, most easily distinguished by the position of MICHAUD's name near the base of the king's bust. The specimen shown is the second type and was struck at Marseille. It is somewhat scarce.

Recorded mintage: 1,256,340[2].

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste-François Michaut (1786-1879); this specimen 25.03 g.
