Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 1860
JE160-1860r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1860 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Charles X (1824-1830), AV 20 francs, 1829 W, Lille. 5946 p. frappées. Très rare. La plus rare des 20 francs or de Charles X. Fines griffes. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Charles X, 1824-30, gold twenty francs of 1829, Lille mint, 5946 pieces struck. Very rare, the rarest twenty francs of Charles X. Hairlines, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This specimen was offered again as lot 1229 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,125 including buyer's fees). This type was struck 1824-30 at four mints (Paris, Lille, Nantes and Perpignan) and the 1825-A is by far the most common date. A few of the 1830-A have reeded edges instead of lettered edges. Two reverse hubs were used; one with 4½ leaves in the wreath and the other with five. This is a rare date.

Recorded mintage: 5,910[2].

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Auguste-François Michaut.

Catalog reference: F.520/11, KM 726.4, Gad-1029; Fr-550.
