Sedwick sale 10, lot 1135

This specimen was lot 1135 in Sedwick sale 10 (Winter Park, FL, October 2011), where it sold for $172.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "France (Paris mint), 1 franc, Charles X, 1830-A, incuse-lettered edge. Choice AU, lightly toned and lustrous." This issue, from the Rouen mint, is a better date of a type struck 1825-30. All francs of Charles X are of this type with the exception of some very rare reeded edge specimens issued in 1830. It was demonetized in 1869. A complete set of this type comprises 84 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. The entire production run, 1825-30, totaled about 5.3 million pieces. The production of five franc pieces in the same period was 123 million. As no one franc coins dated 1830 are known with the bust of Louis Philippe, it is likely that production continued under his regime using old dies.

Recorded mintage: 230,459 (sixth highest mintage date).

Specification: 5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.

Catalog reference: KM-724.1, F.207/34.
