This specimen was lot 70290 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1881-As ML. Alamos Mint. NGC UNC Details—Cleaned. This decently preserved example boasts a strong strike with lustrous satiny surfaces. Attractive light mottled patina with richer coloration near the edges adds to its pleasing appearance. Close inspection reveals evidence of a light past cleaning, now subdued and attractive. Despite its shortcomings a handsome example of the date." The Alamos mint in Sonora began striking eight reales in 1864. The early issues are rare but become more common after 1873. The 1881 is common. The mint was closed in 1895 along with Chihuahua, Durango, Guadalajara and Hermosillo. Oaxaca and San Luis Potosi were closed in 1893.

Recorded mintage: 966,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377; DP-As21.
