This specimen was lot 1497 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €2,700 (about US$3,578 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Constitution (1791-1792), AV louis d'or constitutionnel, 1792A, an 4, Paris. D/ T. nue à g., les cheveux noués par un ruban. R/ Génie inscrivant le mot CONSTI/TUTION sur une table de la loi posée sur un autel. A g., un faisceau. A d., un coq. Très rare Deuxième semestre. Traces de monture. presque Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Constitutional period, gold louis of 1792, year 4, Paris mint. Obverse: bare head to left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: the Genius of France inscribes the Constitution, fasces to right, cock to left. Very rare, second semester, trace of mounting, about Very Fine.)"
This rare type was made in limited numbers at paris and Lille during 1792-93. Either shortage of time or shortage of bullion thwarted further production. In 1793, the king's bust was removed (the king himself having been terminated) and brief issue of 24 livres occurred. No further gold would be minted until 1802, when Napoleonic victories restored the flow of looted bullion to the mints.
Recorded mintage: 32,842.
Specification: 7.64 g, 0.917 fine gold, 23 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen is 7,55 g.
