Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 43189
SB825-43189r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43189 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $19,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Flashy & Brilliant 24 Livres Genius. FRANCE. National Convention. 24 Livres, Year II/1793-BB. Strasbourg Mint. PCGS AU-53. A PHENOMENALLY RARE coin as can be seen from its rather paltry mintage figure, this specimen resides at the precipice of Mint State status, as it radiates with a great deal of lustrous brilliance and golden-orange flair. No doubt one of the finest of the type that one can ever hope to encounter and, rather appropriately, the sole representative for the date and mint in the PCGS census. A tremendous opportunity for the advanced collector of this chaotic period or world gold rarities more broadly. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Patrick Guillard on 5 June 2000 for $5,211.50)." As the Revolution slid into the Terror, the regime found gold harder and harder to obtain. This 24 livres, struck to the standard of the old louis d'or, was issued in tiny quantities. The 1793-A is scarce and expensive; the 1793-BB, D, N and W are rare to very rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,344.

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 23 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-478; KM-626.2; Gad-62.
