Sincona sale 101, lot 2653

This specimen was lot 2653 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 4,000 CHF (about US$6,029 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich und Republik, Convention, 1793-1795. 24 Livres 1793 / AN 2 D, Lyon. Sehr selten. (first republic of France, convention, 1793-95, twenty-four livres of 1793, year 2, Lyon mint. Very rare. NGC XF40.)"

As the Revolution slid into the Terror, the regime found gold harder and harder to obtain. This 24 livres, struck to the standard of the old louis d'or, was issued in tiny quantities. The 1793-A is scarce and expensive; the 1793-BB, D, N and W are rare to very rare.

Recorded mintage: limonite.

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 23 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 626.3, Gadoury 62, Fr-478.
