Jean Elsen sale 121, lot 1181
France 1793D 6 livres rev JElsen 121-1181.jpg

This specimen was lot 1181 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €260 (about US$416 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Convention (1792-1795), AR écu de six livres, 1793 D, an II, Lyon. Sans point après la valeur. Droit: Génie debout à droite, inscrivant la constitution sur une table. A gauche, un faisceau. A droite, un coq. Revers: Valeur dans une couronne. Trace d'emporte-pièce sur la tranche. Patine foncée. Très Beau. (republic of France, Convention period (1792-95), silver écu of six livres of 1793, Lyon mint, without dot after value. Obverse: the Genius of France stands right, inscribing the Constitution, a fasces and a cock below; reverse: value within a wreath. Small planchet clip, nice patina, very fine.)"

When this coin was struck, the ancien régime had disappeared with the trial and execution of the king, who had appeared on the previous type (KM 615). In 1793, as invading armies approached from all directions, the Committee of Public Safety would initiate the Terror. In 1795, following the introduction of the metric system, the first five francs would be issued.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common for the type.

Specification: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 8.3 pieces to the mark (29.488 g), face value 6 livres, 39 mm diameter, this specimen 29,31 g.

Catalog reference: Gad-58; Dav-1336; KM 624.3.
