Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 271

This specimen was lot 271 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$1,980 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Ferran II (1479-1516). València. Ducat. Rara. MBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand II, 1479-1516, undated ducat, Valencia mint, rare, choice very fine.)"

This example shows large busts of Ferdinand and Isabella with S-S below the busts. Cayón states that this is the most common variety of a rare type. It was probably struck after 1497. Queen Isabella died in 1504 but this may have been struck until Ferdinand's death in 1516.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3,48 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-86, Cru.V.S. 1199, Cru.C.G. 3115 var, Cayón-2887.
