Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71575

This specimen is one of a type struck in Mexico at twelve mints 1869-95. This date from the Culiacan mint is rare tho the Durango issue is the key for 1873. Many dates of the balance scale 25 centavos are unknown in high grade. The second specimen was lot 9059 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $373.75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Culiacan. 25 Centavos, 1873-CnP. Weakly struck as usual, toned with underlying luster. EXTREMELY FINE." The fourth specimen was lot 71575 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description^[2] noted, "MEXICO. 25 Centavos, 1873-Cn P. Culiacan Mint. NGC VF-35. A fairly SCARCE and seldom-seen date, this piece presents some alluring toning as well as little actual evidence of time in circulation. The strike is weak in some areas, though entirely consistent with the issue."
