Mexico 1815-Mo HJ escudo

The specimen shown is one of a series struck 1814-20 at Mexico City during the reign of Ferdinand VII, the last king of Spain to rule in America. The reverse legend, "IN.UTROQ.FELIX.A.D.," is an abbreviated form of "IN UTROQUE FELIX AUSPICE DEO," Latin for "Successful in both [worlds] by the favor of God." The 1814 is fairly available; the other dates are all rare. Many survivors show jewelry damage.
