This specimen was lot 12388 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $5,288. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1849-GCMP. NGC AU-58. RARE in this grade. Sharply struck." The specimen shown is one of a series struck 1844-52 at the Guadalupe y Calvo mint. That mint struck all the silver and gold denominations used during the republic, from the ¼ real to the 8 escudos. None are common, tho the gold tends to appear more often than the silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .760 troy oz AGW.
