Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1289

This specimen was lot 1289 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux huit L, 1690X, Amiens. 1er type. 1e réformation. D/ B. dr. à d. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver half écu of the eight "L's" of 1690, Amiens mint, first type, first reformation. Obverse: draped bust right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's", cantonned with four lilies. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux palmes. Droulers[2] prices this date as fairly common, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than a demi-écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: unknown, all rf[21].

Specification: 13.72 g, .917 fine silver, 32-35 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 13,39 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 616, Dupl-1515A; Ci. 1890; Gad-184.
