Zwolle 1595 3 stuivers
This specimen was lot 284 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €280 (about US$396 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ZWOLLE. 1/2 Snaphaanschelling, 1595, Silver Type I. Ruiter naar rechts, in de afsnede jaartal, stadswapentje boven MO. ARG. etc. Kz. gekroonde dubbele adelaar met waarde 3 op de borst en titel RVDOL. II.. RR Kleurrijke patina. Zeer fraai. (city of Zwolle, half Snaphaanschelling of 1595, type I. Obverse: mounted knight charges to the right, date in the exergue, city arms above; reverse: crowned double headed eagle with the value on its breast. Very rare, colorful toning, very fine.)"
The nickname snaphaan ("hensnatcher") comes from the kleptomanic tendencies of the mounted knight depicted on the obverse. Altho emperor Rudolf II is cited on the coin, Zwolle was part of the Netherlands, which by the end of the sixteenth century had secured de facto independence from Spain and the empire.
