Sincona sale 66, lot 1721

This specimen was lot 1721 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$263 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Zwolle, Stadt, Taler o. J. Mit Titel Rudolfs II. Fast sehr schön. (Netherlands, city of Zwolle, undated thaler, struck in the name of Rudolph II. About very fine.)"

Davenport notes that examples are known dated 1594-1600, which is the range we have given this example. Klippe daalders and double daalders exist. Previously, daalders had been issued in conjunction with Deventer and Kampen. Altho emperor Rudolf II is cited on the coin, Zwolle was part of the Netherlands, which by the end of the sixteenth century had secured de facto independence from Spain and the empire.
