Zeeland (15)83 6 stuivers
The first specimen was lot 1183 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €280 (about US$388 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, ZEELAND, AR snaphaanschelling, 1583. Vz/ Ridder n.r. met zwaard achter het provinciewapen. Kz/ Gebloemd kruis met in het hart het provinciewapen. Gereinigd. (Netherlands, province of Zeeland, "hensnatcher" schilling of 1583. The second specimen was lot 237 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €160 (about US$226 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"ZEELAND Provincie 1580 - 1795. Zeeuwse schelling of snaphaan, 1583, Silver Type Ib. Staande ridder met zwaard achter provinciewapen .DOMINE. SERVA. - .NOS. PERIMVS.. Kz. gebloemd kruis met Zeeuws wapentje in het hart, mt. ♖ na afgekort jaartal in het omschrift. Klein hakje aan de rand, enkele blaasjes. Fraai +. (province of Zeeland, 1580-1795, Zeeland shilling or snaphaan of 1583, type IIb. Obverse: standing knight with sword behind provincial coat of arms; reverse: floriate cross with Zeeland arms at the center, tower mintmark after the two digit date. Edge nick, some flaws, fine or better.)"
This obscure type is listed for 1583-85 and undated. The legend "DOMINE · SERVA NOS · PERIMVS" translates as, "Save us Lord, before we perish". Its design is reminiscent of the larger leeuvendaalder, not the classic snaphaanschelling of a century prior. The nickname snaphaan ("hensnatcher") comes from the kleptomanic tendencies of the mounted knight depicted on the obverse of the older coin. The schelling or schilling was later worth six stuivers. A similar three stuivers exists.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.53 g, 0.500 fine silver, 30 mm diameter, the first specimen 5.65 g, the second specimen 5.20 g.
