Zeeland 1597 daalder Dav-8870
This specimen was lot 1752 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, ZEELAND, provinciale leeuwendaalder, 1597. Vz/ Ridder rechtsom kijkend met voor zich het provinciewapen. Kz/ Zeeuwse leeuw l. Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Zeeland, lion daalder of 1597. Obverse: standing knight supports the provincial arms; reverse: rampant lion left. Fine - Very Fine.)"
Lion daalders were struck in most of the provinces that today make up the Netherlands. This type, issued 1597-99, is closely related to that struck in Zeeland for 1606-1658 but shows the lion wading thru surf rather than ramping over dry land.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 26,93 g.
