Zeeland 1598 daalder Dav-8870
This specimen was lot 30169 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "Zeeland. Provincial Lion Daalder 1598 AU55 NGC. A scarcer type featuring light golden tone to both sides with the characteristic striking weakness that almost defines Dutch coinage of the era. Lustrous in the fields, pointing to only very brief use in circulation. Ex. Heritage Auction #3034 (April 2013, Lot 28216); CNG Triton XVII (January 2014, Lot 1363). From the Cape Coral Collection of European Crowns." This leeuwendaalder was struck 1597-99. The seventeenth century issues are catalogued as Dav-4872 and have the lion ramping over dry land rather than wading thru surf, as here.
