Zurich H3049-31544r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31544 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "Zurich. City 1/2 Taler 1739 MS65 NGC. Well struck, with mottled gray and russet toning. The luster is full beneath the toning, and the eye-appeal is superb for this early type. Extremely rare in this condition. The only Mint State example certified by NGC and PCGS combined. From the Redwood Collection, Part II." This type was issued most years 1720-68. The SCWC says ½ thaler = one gulden which doesn't match the usage of southern Germany, where one gulden = 2/3 thaler. The canton of Zurich struck two types of half thalers or gulden simultaneously, this one with the city view reverse and another with a motto reverse (KM 145).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM 146, HMZ 2-1165jj.
