Zurich 1720 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 4787 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$240 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Zürich, Halbtaler 1720. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (canton of Zürich, half thaler of 1720. Very fine-extremely fine.)"
This type was issued most years 1720-68. The SCWC says ½ thaler = one gulden which doesn't match the usage of southern Germany, where one gulden = 2/3 thaler. The canton of Zurich struck two types of half thalers or gulden simultaneously, this one with the city view reverse and another with a motto reverse (KM 145). This is the initial year of issue.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 13.78 g.
