Westfriesland 1758 ducat Fr-295
This specimen was lot 3177 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €460 (about US$620 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NIEDERLANDE, WESTFRIESLAND, Provinz. Dukat 1758. GOLD. Vorzüglich. (Netherlands, province of Westfriesland, ducat of 1758. Extremely fine.)"
The ducat was struck in the Dutch provinces throughout the eighteenth century. It is recorded from Westfriesland with various mintmarks until 1791. For example, KM 93.1 (crane mintmark) was struck to 1714, KM 93.2 (turnip) was struck 1716-49, KM 93.3 (rooster, shown here) was struck 1749-91, KM 93.4 (ship) was struck 1761-65, and KM 93.5 was struck 1776-80. Double ducats also exist but are rare. The early type ducats were hammered; later issues of the eighteenth century, such as this one, were milled. A reeded edge was added in 1756.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
