Aureo y Calicó sale 422, lot 2648

This specimen was lot 2648 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 60 € (about US$78 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1663. Felipe IV. Burgos. R. 16 maravedís. MBC+ [choice very fine]." This denomination was struck 1662-64 at Burgos. The sixteen maravedis which appears here was struck only briefly (1660-64) and then abandoned, most likely due to rejection by the populace. The type is also known from Cuenca, Cordoba, Coruña, Granada, Madrid, Valladolid, Segovia and Seville.
