Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74620
SB223-74620r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74620 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 16 Maravedis, 1664-M Y. Mad[r]id Mint. Philip IV. PCGS AU-55. Fairly well centered and sporting a deep brown hue, this minor presents a charming portrait of the monarch. From the David Sterling Collection." In addition to the reales and escudos familiar to collectors of Spanish American coins, a whole series of copper coins circulated in metropolitan Spain which never made it across the Atlantic despite numerous attempts by colonial authorities to do so. These copper coins appeared in denominations of half, one, two, four, eight and sixteen maravedis (34 maravedis = one real in silver). The sixteen maravedis which appears here was struck only briefly (1660-64) and then abandoned, most likely due to rejection by the populace. This specimen was struck at the Madrid mint (mintmark: M). Similar coins were emitted from Trujillo, Granada, Seville, Segovia, Toledo and Valladolid. Cayón assigns several catalog numbers to this date; Cayón-5578 is for the "Y" without dots and reversed "N" in "HISPANIARUM".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper with a silver wash.

Catalog reference: Cayón-5578, KM-172.5; Cal-481.
