SB826-43039r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43039 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $170.80. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 16 Maravedis, 1663-S. Madrid Mint. Philip IV. NGC MS-61 Brown." In addition to the reales and escudos familiar to collectors of Spanish American coins, a whole series of copper coins circulated in metropolitan Spain which never made it across the Atlantic despite numerous attempts by colonial authorities to do so. These copper coins appeared in denominations of half, one, two, four, eight and sixteen maravedis (34 maravedis = one real in silver). The sixteen maravedis which appears here was struck only briefly (1660-64) and then abandoned, most likely due to rejection by the populace. This specimen was struck at the Madrid mint (mintmark: M). Similar coins were emitted from Trujillo, Granada, Seville, Segovia, Toledo and Valladolid. Cayón assigns numbers 5542 thru 5547 for the many varieties.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper with a silver wash, this specimen 3.90 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-limonite, KM-172.5.
