Aureo y Calicó sale 422, lot 2651

This specimen was lot 2651 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 18 € (about US$23 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1662. Felipe IV. Granada. N. 16 maravedís. MBC+/MBC [very fine or better]." This denomination was struck 1661-64 at Granada, a scarce mint. The mintmark is a pomegranate. The sixteen maravedis which appears here was struck only briefly (1660-64) and then abandoned, most likely due to rejection by the populace. The type is also known from Cuenca, Cordoba, Coruña, Valladolid, Madrid, Seville, Segovia and Burgos.
