Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 177

This specimen was lot 177 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €75,000 (about US$98,978 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1663. Felipe IV. Madrid. S. 8 reales. Extraordinariamente rara. ¿Única conocida? MBC. (kingdom of Spain, Philip IV, eight reales of 1663, Madrid. Extremely rare, perhaps unique. Very fine.)"

This type, tho mentioned in Cayón and Calicó, is so rare as to perhaps be a pattern. The Madrid mint would not switch to milled coinage until the end of the reign of Charles II and portrait coinage would be adopted during the reign of Philip V.
