Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 109

The first specimen was lot 312 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €480 (about US$634 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Enrique IV (1454-1474). Cuenca. Real de anagrama. Orlas octolobulares. Bella. Ex Áureo & Calicó Selección 2018, nº 103. Escasa y más así. EBC+. (kingdom of Castile and Leon, Henry IV, 1454-74, Cuenca mint, monogram obverse. Handsome, scrace thus, choice extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 109 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,122 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Enrique IV (1454-1474). Cuenca. Real de anagrama. Orlas lobulares. Bella. Preciosa pátina. Rara así. EBC+. (kingdom of Castile and Leon, Henry IV, 1454-74, Cuenca mint, monogram obverse. Handsome, toned, rare thus, choice extremely fine.)"

One reales were struck until 1471 with the king's portrait on the obverse, then with a crowned monogram thereafter. The Cuenca issue comes with the mintmark on the obverse or reverse. The type was also produced at Burgos, Coruña, Medina del Campo, Segovia, Seville, Toledo and Villalon. Henry was king of Castile and Leon but not of Aragon or Navarre. His niece, Isabella, and Ferdinand of Aragon would unite Spain.
