Spain (1471-74)-B real
This specimen was lot 483 in Jean Elsen sale 157 (Brussels, December 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ESPAGNE, CASTILLE ET LEON, Henri IV (1454-1474), AR real, Burgos. D/ Dans un polylobe, HEN sous une couronne. R/ Polylobe écartelé aux armes de Castille et Leon. La lettre B sur le bras supérieur de la croix. Rare. Très Beau. Provient du trésor de Bazas, vente Vinchon, Angoulême, 29 octobre 2005, 246. (Spain, kingdom of Castile and Leon, Henry IV, 1454-74, silver real, Burgos mint. Obverse: within a polylobe, HEN under a crown; reverse: polylobe with the quartered arms of Catile and Leon, a "B" on the upper arm of the cross. Rare, Very Fine.)"
One reales were struck until 1471 with the king's portrait on the obverse and with a crowned monogram thereafter. The Burgos issue comes with the mintmark on the top (shown here) or the bottom. The type was also produced at Cuenca, Coruña, Medina del Campo, Segovia, Seville, Toledo and Villalon. Henry was king of Castile and Leon but not of Aragon or Navarre. His niece, Isabella, and Ferdinand of Aragon would unite Spain.
