Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55782

This specimen was lot 55782 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 1/2 "Christmas" Taler, 1617. Dresden Mint. Johann Georg I. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, EF Details. From the Augustana Collection." This half thaler was issued as part of a series commemorating the centennial of the Reformation which included coins ranging from one-eighth thaler to quadruple ducat. Other half thalers for 1617 include KM 100, KM 102 (the regular issue), KM 101 and KM 99. King Solomon also appears on a double ducat (Fr-2667) and quadruple ducat (Fr-2665). Soon after this issue, the Thirty Years War would break out, wrecking German prosperity.
