Russia 1854-EM 5 kopeks
This specimen was lot 506 in Sincona sale 78 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,139 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Nicholas I. 1825-1855, 5 Kopecks 1854, Ekaterinburg Mint, EM. Extremely fine. Some tiny scratches." The Ekaterinburg mint was opened in the eighteenth century to strike copper coinage and did so in large quantities until 1876. This five kopeks, along with a quarter, half, one, two and three kopeks, was struck there 1850-59. Despite the large mintage, it is scarce. A revised type (KM Y6a), with eight coats of arms on the eagle's wings and a ribbon hanging from the imperial crown, was struck 1859-67.
Recorded mintage: 356,000.
Specification: 16.4 g, copper, 32.6 mm diameter. This specimen is 22.47 g.
