This specimen was lot 31174 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "Russia: Nicholas I gold 5 Roubles 1854 СПБ-АГ MS64 PCGS, St. Petersburg mint. Obv. Crowned double-headed eagle with orb and scepter. Rev. Date and value in beaded circle. Scarce in this near-gem condition. The highest certified example, with the next finest being AU58." This type was struck at the St. Petersburg mint 1846-54. Large numbers were made but few survive. In 1886, the standard was revised to match the French twenty francs d'or, resulting in a weight reduction to .186 troy oz.
