Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72173

This specimen was lot 72173 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 5 Kopeks, 1859-EM. Ekaterinburg Mint. Alexander II. NGC MS-61 Brown. Ribbons At Crown. This attractive looking copper issues exhibits a bold strike displaying rich chocolate brown patina with a slight iridescent sheen adding to its pleasing appearance." The Ekaterinburg mint was opened in the eighteenth century to strike copper coinage and did so in large quantities until 1876. This five kopeks, along with a quarter, half, one, two and three kopeks, was struck there 1859-67.

Recorded mintage: 19,441,000 (including KM C152.1).
