Sincona sale 84, lot 419

This specimen was lot 419 in Sincona sale 84 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 8,500 CHF (about US$11,446 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSIA Russian Empire and Federation, 5 Roubles 1859, St. Petersburg Mint, SPB PF. Rare date. Extremely fine."

This type was struck 1859-85 in considerable numbers yet is scarce in choice condition. Proofs exist. In 1886, the standard was revised to match the French twenty francs d'or, resulting in a weight reduction to 0.186 troy oz (see KM Y42).

Recorded mintage: 3,900,000.
