This specimen was lot 22440 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 5 Kopeks, 1853-CNB HI. NGC AU-50. Nicholas I (1825-55)." This type was struck 1832-58 in large quantities but is today seldom seen in nice condition. In 1860 the coin was lowered to 0.750 fine and then in 1867 lowered to 0.9 g, 0.500 fine. Copper five kopeks are also known for many dates.
Recorded mintage: 900,000 plus a few proofs.
Specification: 1.03 g, 0.868 fine silver, .028 troy oz ASW.
