Russia 1851-SP PA ruble Dav-283
This specimen was lot 40757 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,998. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1851-CNB NA. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Attractively toned." The second specimen was lot 1471 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €115 (about US$152 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"RUSSIE, Nicolas Ier (1825-1855), AR rouble, 1851ΠA, Saint-Pétersbourg. Saint Georges sans manteau. Fines griffes. Belle patine. Très Beau. (empire of Russia, Nicholas I, 1825-55, silver ruble of 1851, St. Petersburg mint. St. George without mantle. Fine scratches, nice patina, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1832-58 in large quantities but is today very rare in nice condition. This date is known with an 1851/0 overdate.
