Russia 1851-EM 5 kopeks
This specimen was lot 32240 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $990. The catalog description[1] noted, "Russia: Nicholas I 5 Kopecks 1851-EM MS63 Brown PCGS, Ekaterinburg mint. Obv. Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle with orb and scepter. Rev. Date and value in wreath. Much original mint-red luster, with moderate marks. A small area of corrosion is noted on the obverse at 6 o'clock. Much scarcer that one might expect. Only two examples have been certified by PCGS and NGC combined, with this example the finest of the two." Silver five kopeks were struck at St. Petersburg 1832-58. Copper five kopeks were struck in Ekaterinburg (shown here) and Warsaw (mintmark BM) 1850-59. Altho the copper five kopeks were struck in much larger quantities, they are today much scarcer, suggested that the siver coins were hoarded.
Recorded mintage: 2,241,000.
Specification: copper.
