Russia 1850-EM 5 kopeks
This specimen was lot 34942 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "Russia: Nicholas I 5 Kopecks 1850-EM MS62 Brown PCGS, Ekaterinburg mint. A very attractive first year piece with nutmeg surfaces free of any significant aesthetic issues, and crisp devices possessing a wonderful aura of scarlet chroma." The Ekaterinburg mint was opened in the eighteenth century to strike copper coinage and did so in large quantities until 1876. This five kopeks, along with a quarter, half, one, two and three kopeks, was struck there 1850-59.
