Russia 1846-SP PA 10 kopeks
This specimen was lot 36357 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nicholas I silver 10 Kopecks 1846/5 CПБ-ПA MS67 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, even though not marked as such on the holder, the overdate 6/5 is clearly visible. Obv. Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle. Rev. Crowned date and value in wreath. The strike is flawless and the pristine surfaces glisten beneath appealing green and gray patina. This is the single finest example certified by NGC and PCGS combined." This type was struck 1832-58 in large numbers and this is a fairly common date. The SCWC mentions the overdate but awards it no premium. In 1859, the silver was reduced to 0.750 fine and reduced again to 0.500 fine in 1867.
