Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 43348
SB0123-43348r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43348 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 5 Kopeks, 1846-CNB NA. St. Petersburg Mint. Nicholas I. PCGS MS-65." This type was struck 1832-58 in substantial numbers. This is a lower mintage date but the SCWC awards it no premium. The Russian government does not seem to have been able to make up its mind whether the five kopeks denomination should be a small silver coin, as here, or a large copper coin. Both were struck during the 1850's. Today, the silver piece is readily available (probably due to hoarding) but the copper type (KM C152) is hard to find in nice condition.

Recorded mintage: 280,000.

Specification: 1.036 g, 0.868 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-C163; Bit-401.
