Russia Alb27-1569r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1569 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIAN EMPIRE: Nicholas I, 1825-1855, AR 25 kopeks, 1853. initials HI, a few light toning blotches on reverse, NGC graded MS62." This type was struck 1832-58 in large quantities but is today much coveted in nice condition. In 1886 the coin was lowered in weight to 5 g but raised in purity to 0.900 fine to more closely match the French standard. A rare variety exists for 1853 which is missing the assayer's initials.

Recorded mintage: 2,160,000.

Specification: 5.18 g, 0.868 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM C166.1.
